There are over 80 centres that are actively engaged in health research in the country. The Iranian molecular medicine network www.irmolmednet.ir was created in 2000, with the purpose of improving research management and for creating necessary, adequate and relevant infrastructure in this field in the post genomic era. Two other (related) networks were later created in the country, namely the national network for medical biotechnology and the national network for herbal medicine www.mbn.ir. There are currently 36 national centres that are members of the national molecular medicine network. Six national institutes of the country are members of this network, namely the Pasteur Institute www.pasteur.ac.ir, National Research Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Razi Institute for Vaccine Development, Sharif University, Tarbiat Modaris University and Medical Universities of Tehran, Shiraz and Mashad.
